On Tuesday, Oct. 8,2007 the Greenbrier County Prosecutors office and the West Virginia State Police turned to the public in their efforts to identify a murder victim whose body was dumped in a rural part of the county.
At the press conference, Greenbrier County Prosecutor Kevin Hanson displayed a clay model of a woman’s face. A forensic anthropologist from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and a local Fayette County artist recreated her likeness using bone structure and other clues from the skull.
"If anyone thinks they recognize this person, call the Prosecutor’s office at 647-6616 and we will follow up every phone call," said Hanson. "We are looking for leads to identify this victim."
The body was found on May 9, 2001 in a roadside dump off Interstate 64 near the Alta exit by a man searching for bottles. Officials theorize the victim was killed around May 1998.
The state medical examiner’s office further described the victim as a white female, age 37 to 47, approximately five-foot-tall, with a chipped lower front tooth, mother of at least one child, possibly left handed and maybe a smoker.
Sgt. Mike Spradlin of the State Police Cold Case Unit at the Lewisburg detachment is investigating the case and anyone with information may call the State Police, 647-7600, his cell phone number, 541-2911 or page him, 251-5154.
"I think it’s a domestic violence situation and people may be afraid to come forth," said Spradlin.
